A few years ago I went to Boston and ran the Boston Marathon. I watched this video. It was by this guy named John Collins. So to me he's just the guy who gave me that ultramarathon. I thought, 'Wait a minute. Why are they putting these people on ultramarathons?' At a certain point, people are gonna get tired. They gotta sleep. So what's the point in trying to make the next person try to beat me.

So maybe if they really wanted the ultramarathon they'd just stop for half an hour?

There's really nothing more to it. If you're still training, you've got to train as much as you possibly can, but the point is that for people who want to go out, if you're not going to be doing it, you need to find something else you've got. If you're going to go do those other things that are better options, you need to find a way to keep up. This stuff is important and it's important for people.

You run two marathons. What would you most like to accomplish from the races so far?

I don't know. I really haven't run my fastest marathons yet — my fastest on the day was four hours and 10 minutes. It was one of those three hours where I was out in the middle of nowhere and I wasn't sure if I could even do it. It was an amazing feeling. I'm just kind of sitting here right now watching this video and the dude is like, 'Dude, why are you running two marathons?'" I went, 'Look. You're doing one! The last one was going to be a marathon. I'm going to go do what I'm doing and try to be like the guy with the one marathon and the one marathon-running marathon.' So I just ran two races and was like, 'Ok. Ok, what are we doing?'"
